Over the past year we have been working closely with NHS England (Cheshire and Merseyside) to help them reduce the premature deaths of people with learning disabilities as part of the LeDeR program.

We have been doing this by focussing on 2 areas that have been identified as causes of premature death, these are undiagnosed cancers and respiratory disease. Our project we have focused on these 2 areas by

  • Identifying the signs and symptoms that could indicate cancer
  • Looking after our lungs.

To help us get these important messages out to people with learning disabilities we have:

  • Developed some accessible and interactive training roadshows that we deliver to groups and organisations working with people with learning disabilities
  • Produced a poster that can be displayed in the places people with learning disabilities go as well as in health services.
  • Made a film starring our members that can be used by anyone to help people to recognise the signs and symptoms of cancer.
  • Produced an accessible booklet to help people understand how to look after their lungs. It includes information about what lungs are and how they can keep them healthy.

Over the next year members of our group will be going  out and delivering this  training  and promoting the resources to other people with learning disabilities across the North West and Yorkshire and Humber.
