At People First Merseyside, we have been doing lots of work around health, including Cancer Symptom Awareness and Lung Health. This work has been really successful and as a result NHS England funded us to use our skills to raise awareness of Learning Disability Annual Health Checks.

Currently across Merseyside, the uptake of Learning Disability Annual Health checks is poor. We want to empower people with a learning disability to be able to go to their GP and ask for one.

Our members have worked really hard to develop an accessible, easy read booklet that will help other people with learning disabilities to understand what to expect from a Learning Disability Annual Health Check.

The booklet is interactive and provides tools to help people with a learning disability to be in control of what happens at their health check. This includes: thinking about reasonable adjustments, questions to ask at the health check and a page to record actions that should happen after the health check is complete.

To assist in increasing the uptake of Learning Disability Annual Health Checks, the booklets include a tear off slip that can be filled in and taken to the GP practice. This will help GPs identify people with learning disabilities within their practice and highlight the need for a regular Learning Disability Annual Health Check.

The booklets can be downloaded from the resources page on our website

You can also contact us to request hard copies of the booklet (P&P charge will apply) by calling 0151 329 2137 or emailing helenf@peoplefirst.uk.com
